Et vous, qu'en pensez-vous?

In English

Today, in the French daily newspaper Le Monde, I discovered a triple visual news report I found very interesting - "Père-Lachaise, cimetière buissonnier". (The link for that page doesn't seem to work; search the site using the title of the article.) It's a report in three parts - one per presenter - with sound and moving images about the famous Parisian cemetery. The readers' comments were rather positive, apart from one who reminded people about the nature of the place - somewhere to reflect after losing someone - and protested against visiting graveyards - with or without a guide. What about you? What is your opinion on the matter?

L'amour de la lecture / The love of reading

En français
J'adore enseigner car j'adore découvrir.

« In Libro Veritas – La Littérature équitable».

In English
I love teaching because I love discovering things. From one lesson to another, I make different discoveries – a French region, a traditional song from Brittany, a new automotive production process, a Parisian museum... My students have a varied range of interests which widen my horizons.

With some of my adult students, we use as a starting point to our lessons various written materials – newspapers, novels, short stories, tales... We agree on a text to read for the next session then we discuss it.

For those who find it frustrating to be able to understand French but not be able to speak it, such a method presents a lot of advantages. Firstly you improve your vocabulary and range of grammatical and idiomatic structures. Then it puts the conversations into context and allows you to revise basic phrases used in conversation - “Sorry, could you repeat, please?”, “What did you mean by that?”... It's a good way of discovering French-speaking countries through their cultures, histories, famous people, etc.

The question I always get asked is what materials to use. These past few months, one of my students and I have gone through a British book entitled “Easy French Reader: A Three-part Text for Beginning Students (Easy Reader Series)” by R. De Roussy De Sales, which is designed to an Anglophone audience and aims indeed the joint discover of the French language and culture. I cannot comment on all the texts contained in these books, as I have only read some of them, but my student seems to have mostly found it useful. The literary texts chosen here were understandable in terms of level and there were notes in the margins that gave explanations about the least common words or idioms.

Whilst surfing the next for one of those texts, I discovered a site entitled “In Libro Veritas – La Littérature équitable”. There you can find a huge range of texts of varying types and topics – literature, theatre, poetry, etc – which are either in the public domain or where the author has agreed to share their work with the public. The texts are therefore either free or available for a modest sum that goes directly to their authors.

I do recommend you check this site, as it is an easy way to discover great classical French-speaking authors as well as other great authors whose works were translated into French.

Feel free to send me a message to tell me which jewels you have unearthed there and what you think about them.

Art and Design Exhibition in aid of MAGPAS

This has nothing to do with French other than some of the organisers are francophile, but I thought that those of you who like art and who want to support local artists and charities might be interested in it.

This exhibition on Saturday 13th June 2009, is organised by local artists to raise funds for the charity MAGPAS, an emergency medical charity for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. If the film´s characters are fictional, they are nevertheless based on existing life stories of African soldiers of that period.

This film has of course got an agenda: making people – and specifically young French people from African descent – aware of the injustice and downright racism with which these soldiers were treated during that period. Yet I found it a sober film that did not rely on melodrama or a narrator ´s comments to convey its message.

Its most famous actors were Djamel Debouzze (whom some of you will recognise as the young grocer in “Amélie”) and Samy Naceri (the memorable Marseilles taxi driver of the “Taxi” film series). Though Debouzze was not far, here, from its Amélie character, Naceri´s performance was miles away from his famous “Taxi” one and – in my humble opinion – flawless.
I would also like to say “hats off” to the actors playing the other main African characters and their Sergeant. Their performances were convincing and moving.

I am not the only one to have thought that. Indeed, after watching the film, in September 2006 the then French president Jacques Chirac decided that the pensions of foreign soldiers who fought in the French army were to be brought into line with those of French ones (see these BBC and Libération articles).

To sum things up, I very much enjoyed this film. Let me know what you thought of it.

References / Références

Internet Movie DataBase
Radio France International
Lille University
L'Express magazine
CNDP
